Just How Often Should You Redesign Your Website?

Business owners are always conscious about how they look and are presented to the outside world. It’s a huge part of winning business in the first place. Where once upon a time that may have been through a shop front or office layout, the website is the window to every business these days, and an important part of who you are, what you offer and how you wish to be portrayed.

That’s why website design is so important, and website redesign is even more so as businesses look to keep up to speed. It’s easier than ever to redesign your website these days. While many big businesses may pay tens of thousands of dollars with large design agencies, others will make the most of a website builder company, offering easy-to-use and modern templates to quickly bring their websites into the present.

But the one question that still remains is…exactly how often should you redesign your website?

How Often Should You Redesign Your Website?

Now, there’s a simple answer and a more complex answer to this, and it’s perhaps the latter that you should pay more attention to. Now, typically, as a rule of thumb, most experts say you should look at redesigning your website every three years to refresh and keep in line with the latest technology updates.

However, there are way more factors that need to be considered that could either keep your website design for longer or mean you need to speed up that redesign process.

Factors to Consider

What you need to consider is, firstly, how good your last redesign or initial website was. If you put together a cheap and quick website to get the ball rolling with your website, then you may wish to consider investing further in your website as it grows, which could lead to a redesign after, say, year one.

Then there are things such as your designer and developers’ talent levels. All sorts of factors determine how good your website is, and more importantly how it performs for the user and in the eyes of Google, so continually monitoring key stats can help you determine when it’s time to have a rethink about your website.

Google’s Core Web Vitals are instrumental in what position Google will rank your website on the search engine and takes into account a number of page and load speed factors which are scored.

Google has a recommended score for each factor and if your site is below what The search engine deems good, then it may be time to consider a little design and development time to get your site up to scratch.

You then need to consider the design. Today, trends are moving faster than ever before and if a designer hasn’t really pushed the boundaries when developing your website, then you may feel that your site is looking a little dated well before that three-year mark.

With the metaverse on the horizon, designs are changing rapidly. This is where quick changes to the latest templates with website builders can be hugely effective compared to complete overhauls that cost a significant amount of money.

The Answer…

Ultimately, there’s no real right answer when it comes to the amount of time to pass before you need to redesign your website. It very much depends on a number of factors. You need to understand:

  • Is your site fit for purpose today?
  • Does it represent where you want your business to be?
  • Does it look, feel and perform like it should in the modern day?

There’s no fixed time limit on that, but every six months or so it’s well worth asking this question, and comparing it to where the web design industry and search landscape is at that moment in time to make your decision.
